Background

Chalco Ruimin, located in China’s Fuzhou Province, is an aluminum products manufacturer. It is part of the Aluminum Corporation of China (CHINALCO), a state-owned enterprise that is the world’s second-largest alumina producer and the third-largest primary aluminum producer. Chalco Ruimin manufactures a large variety of goods for construction, packaging, electrical applications and transport equipment. Chalco Ruimin recently completed the installation of more than 170 units of VIVOTEK cameras at its production plants in a project implemented by system integrator KTInfo. The camera models installed include IP7121, IP7361 and 7000-series speed domes. Chalco Ruimin is also taking advantage of VIVOTEK VAST CMS solution.

Solution

Most of the cameras are used to monitor the production process inside Chalco Ruimin’s plants, serving a dual purpose: to provide general security, and to generate footage for operator training. Real-time monitoring of the video feeds using VAST’s streaming server allows for quick responses to incidents and equipment failures. Video is also recorded via VAST, archived for review and the aforementioned training purposes. As for the specific camera models used, the IP7121 is a D1-resolution box camera, sold mostly in China. According to Wu Ben Chen, Account Manager of KTInfo, this model was chosen for its Sony HAD CCD sensor, which provides superior light sensitivity. “That’s important because Chalco Ruimin wanted to capture very clear video, especially for their training purposes, but the lighting was not always the best.” Another feature that has proved valuable is the camera’s support for dual streaming. “That gives them the flexibility to use one high-resolution stream for recording, and another lower-resolution stream for routine real-time monitoring,” explains Chen. For particularly sensitive locations such as entry and exit points, the IP7361 was used. This high-end network bullet camera boasts 2-megapixel resolution for extremely clear detail, while it offers outdoor-specific features like concealed wiring to thwart tampering, weather-proofing, and day-and-night recording. The 7000 series speed dome cameras, a variety of different models of which have been deployed in a range of different locations, also provide high-resolution video monitoring day and night, along with continuous 360° pan and 90° tilt, easily controlled manually via a mouse or a joystick, or configurable with presets for patrolling.

Benefits

As for video management software, Chalco Ruimin chose VIVOTEK VAST for streaming and recording because it was a good fit for centralized administration. Its extensible CMS architecture is also a key asset as Chalco Ruimin plans significant expansion of its monitoring system in the future. Chalco Ruimin is taking advantage of the VAST Matrix Server, adopting six server machines, each with a four video-out ports for connection to a TV wall, allowing for real-time monitoring at a central control room. The solution enables the security staff to respond to emergency promptly and effectively. The VIVOTEK solution-based monitoring system has already proved its worth, providing reliable 24-hour surveillance that was able to pinpoint the cause of an incident in which a vehicle crashed into a loading gate. The lights at the industrial site are also on all year round. High-quality archived footage is providing ideal as training videos for new equipment operators as well. It is little wonder then that Chalco Ruimin plans to continue using VIVOTEK cameras in newly built plants.
